Best Beach Ever: A Novel by Wendy Wax

Best Beach Ever: A Novel (Ten Beach Road #6). Wendy Wax.  Penguin Publishing Group. Copyright 2018. pb. 400 pp.; ISBN: 9780399584411.

The gals are back again!!! (However, this can be read as a stand alone novel.) They’ve got new challenges to enthrall us!

Bella Flora has been rented out to a former nemesis of Kyra, Troy, who now is claiming that he has always loved her.  But Kyra is definitely not buying it and we will have to see where this goes – but don’t be so sure you can predict everything.

Kyra meanwhile has agreed to let her son, Dustin, be in his father Daniel’s new movie.  Daniel is now trying to be a director and not just an actor.  Kyra has huge reservations about Dustin being with Daniel and his new wife, troubling fears that turn out to be a mother’s gut feelings that are spot on and trustworthy.

Then we have Nicki who has had twins and is trying to get back to her svelte, former form.  She’s also finding the care of twins to be overwhelming and her husband Joe advises her to hire some help while he’s away on business.  The woman they hire is endearing to the twins and readers as well, perhaps too much so for Nicki’s liking.  Niki will change because of this experience as well, in a frustrating but heart-warming series of events.

Bitsy has been cheated out of a fortune but is about to serve her own brand of justice on her lying, cheating husband!

Maddie as always is the imparter of hard-earned wisdom, learned after her own trials and divorce.  Still she learns that she’s entitled to her own life with its pleasures with her new romance.  But she also learns that she doesn’t have to anyone’s “first” but instead be her own person first.  Let the chips fall where they may!

This is the conclusion of this series and readers will want to read the previous five novels.  Wendy Wax is a seasoned author who knows how to craft a realistic story with ups and downs that leave the reader challenged and entertained!!!  Highly recommended contemporary fiction!

Sunshine Beach: A Novel by Wendy Wax

Sunshine Beach: A Novel. Wendy Wax. Penguin Publishing Group. June 2016. 432 pp.  ISBN#: 9780425274484.

Wendy Wax is back to offer readers hope and optimism in the face of financial and emotional loss.

Avery’s relationship with her mother had healed but come to a shocking end upon her mother’s death, a loss keenly felt by Avery and accompanied by all too many associations to remind her of that empty spot in her life.
Maddie has fallen in love with a former rock star who has been through success, alcohol and drug rehab, and fear only to find himself writing again and being plunged back into the spotlight, along with every worshipping female from the past.

Nikki’s former lover, a star as well, visits Nikki and their son but wants the romance and love back; Nikki is wisely aloof although physically propelled toward him.

Maddie, Avery and Nikki lost all their money in a Ponzi scheme at the hands of Nikki’s brother. Devising a project to pay off debt and become financially comfortable is the present goal, easier said than done.

Now Maddie’s daughter, Kyra, during one of her runs, stumbles across an old, abandoned beach hotel in terrible condition.  The friends immediately upon seeing it want to restore it and make it another, but this time independent, TV series like their past ones which ended in disaster due to bad chemistry with others in charge of the projects. However, this novel has an extra glitch and a big one at that!  It turns out that the father of the present owners was murdered in one of the beach cottages and their mother disappeared on the same evening.  This turns out to be what is now known as a cold case involving the mother’s German background during the time of the Nazis in WWII.  The sisters who own the home are afraid to tear it down for fear that whoever killed their mother will not be caught, even though it’s fifty years after the fact.  Can all these sisters have it their own way – find answers to the murder and restore a beach hotel to new grandeur and pleasure for its designers and hopefully future customers?

Wendy Wax has done it again, putting just enough mystery, snarky comments, conflicts, and romance to make this a delightful summer read!  Nicely crafted and recommended!

A Week at the Lake: A Novel by Wendy Wax

A Week at the Lake: A Novel.  Wendy Wax. Penguin Group (USA). June 2015. 432 pp.  ISBN#: 9780425274477.

Wendy Wax is back and better than before!  The story takes place amid the frenetic lifestyle of New York City and then moves to the gorgeous, summer vacation site of Lake George in the Adirondack Mountains of New York State.  But before we get to the blissful vacation, we learn a little bit about each of the three women who were once best friends and who spent many, many summers enjoying each other’s company at the Lake George home of Emma Michaels.  Mackenzie Hayes and Serena Stockton are wondering why they have not been invited to Emma’s home for five years. All of their families are into acting in one way or another, but the plot that is about to unfold will take more stamina and guts than has ever been performed on stage.

A terrible accident is about to happen and Mackenzie and Serena are determined to be there for Zoe, Emma’s daughter, for as long as she needs their support.  Emma’s family appears as well, which jettisons these friends into delightful, comic, bittersweet scenes as the reality of the situation brings out the best and worst in everyone.  Meanwhile, Mackenzie whose husband is off in California for a possible work-related job, feels alone and second fiddle to Adam’s goals.  Serena, a famous actress in a very well-known animated TV show, has a reputation for dating married men but faces her own challenge in the midst of the prevailing chaos.  Off they all go to Lake George – eventually!

Secrets and truthful feelings emerge as they spend more and more time with each other.  The rest is a shocker that could make or break the best of friendships.  Amid the beauty, unexpected revelations and attempts at healing arrive certain characters who have the opportunity to make the threesome bond more deeply. The question is how to adjust to all these changes that are happening at rapid-fire moments and how to truly enjoy each other and the surrounding, tranquil environment around them.  Add a feisty foreign aide to the comedy of it all!

Wendy Wax gets better and better at plotting great summer reads!  The plot has just enough reality to bring credibility to the story and adds some unique scenes that keep the reader fascinated. Fans will be very pleased and more with this latest novel about changing relationships and new readers will have a fine read of a very talented author!  Lovely, delightful and heartily recommended contemporary fiction!!!

The House on Mermaid Point by Wendy Wax

The House on Mermaid Point.  Wendy Wax. Penguin Group (USA). July 2014. 416 pp.  ISBN#: 9780425263327.

Maddie, Avery, Nicki and other characters are back to renovate another broken-down home, this time in the Florida Keys.  William Hightower, a former rock star known as “William the Wild” is a recovering alcoholic who is forced by his son to agree to this renovation as there isn’t a penny left from all Will’s years of being a star.  What does one do with life when the fame, the booze and drugs aren’t there as one’s foundation?

Avery and her mother Deirdre are still at war with each other, payback for all the years in which Deirdre ran off and left her daughter alone.

Maddie is newly divorced from Steve who lost his job and his pride but who never allowed Maddie to have her own life and falsely believed she could not function without him. Is he in for a surprise!  With her daughter Kyra and her grandson Dustin, they say their goodbyes to what was their home for years, uncertain about what the future will bring.

Nicki, the former owner of a dating agency, like so many others who were bankrupted by a Ponzi scam, is also wondering how this latest venture will give her both security and some ideas for the future.  She also is bound for a life-changing point of view.

William is not exactly the most endearing of characters, that is until he meets Maddie.  But both are intriguing characters as they slowly warm up to each other and yet also have some major misunderstandings about their stereotypical ideas about romance and the roles of men and women.  All this occurs while they are doing back-breaking but marvelous work recreating William’s home into something that will indeed breed new life for many in future years!

Add to that the glorious descriptions of magnificent flora, fauna, ocean views, houseboats, architecture and the reader will relish this book as a sequel to Ten Beach Road but also as a stand-alone lovely novel.

Nicely done again, Wendy Wax!!!

Christmas At The Beach - A Ten Beach Road Novella by Wendy Wax

Christmas at the Beach (A Ten Beach Road Novella).  Wendy Wax. Penguin Group USA.  October 2013. 52 pp. pbk. ISBN #: 9781101625965.

One year ago a group of family, friends and acquaintances joined together to renovate an old historical beach house, Bella Flora.  Madeline Singer, Avery Lawford, and Nicole Grant agreed to a reality-style filming of their efforts, showing their marvelous talents and skills in full force as they took a broken down, almost ready to be demolished home into its full beauty and strengths as a model historical home worthy of its old but gorgeous Florida beach house status.  That process wasn’t pretty all the time and betrayals and secrets almost destroyed them each emotionally, as well as financially.  Secrets galore threatened as well and here we are a year later in actual and fictional time gradually learning there are still more shocking secrets to shatter the serene Christmas atmosphere.  But first there are celebrations for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day to be held, with eating, drinking and chatting as the original characters and other relatives gather for their last holiday at Bella Flora.

Kyra, Madeleine’s daughter, is first surrounded by the paparazzi at the airport and in a funny scene escapes their voracious quest for just one picture, and another, and another.  It’s not very long after her arrival at the beachfront mansion that a huge, absolutely huge gift arrives from the father of her son, Daniel Deranian, who is already married, with the most horrific virago of a wife one could ever imagine.

Add to that the awareness dawning on Kyra that all is not well between her parents and a later discovery on who has finally bought the redone beauty, Bella Flora, and you begin to get the picture that this is a family that seems to be defined by constant “drama” although not everyone takes it that way.

Still, they find time each evening to have a celebratory drink and offering of what’s good in their worlds which is heartwarming at times and simply lovely at others.
It also turns out that they will begin a new renovation next year somewhere in the Florida Keys, The House on Mermaid Point – something to definitely look forward to reading and sharing!

Christmas at the Beach is a lovely story about a typical yet unique family gathering together to share, bicker, love and heal – like most families wind up doing at holiday time!  Great Read!!!

While We Were Watching Downton Abbey by Wendy Wax

While We Were Watching Downton Abbey.  Wendy Wax. Penguin Group (USA). April 2013. 384 pp. pbk. ISBN #: 97804525263310.

A motley group live in the Alexander Building, watched over by the gentleman Edward, who sees to the needs of the building and arranges for a weekly showing of Downton Abbey, the British serial show that millions around the world have been avidly following and immensely enjoying.  This is where Samantha, Claire, Brooke and other minor characters live and where they bond through their Sunday evening gatherings!

Samantha and her siblings were poor when she met her rich husband.  She can’t cook and always orders in and she can’t control her sister and brother who are money-hungry parasites and a mother-in-law who bullies her and the rest of the family.  Jonathan maintains silence throughout all this, including the grand schemes of Samantha’s brother that have made Jonathan lose thousands of dollars.  One begins to sense a constant sense of intense fear looming beneath Samantha’s exterior, an unwillingness to risk speaking truth to her husband, brother or sister.  Beginning new friendships with Brooke and Claire begins to change it all, very slowly but oh so surely!

Claire is a writer who has written Highland romances that readers love.  But she has a massive case of writer’s block, even though she doesn’t acknowledge she has it and doesn’t seem willing to explore why this dry spell has developed.  She has this new life and doesn’t quite seem able to settle into it easily.  Then she begins to attend the Sunday gatherings around the TV series and eventually wakes up to a whole new world!
Brook is divorced from the man she worked to put through medical school.  Now he’s threatening her with being thrown out of the Alexander and at the same time he and his new girlfriend are going to buy a new place in the same building.  He’s a Dad when it’s convenient and not financially supportive of her children; she needs money and some new confidence on the interior.  Edward sees everything and finds a niche for Brook that is life-saving in many, many different ways!

Downton Abbey is about the ups and downs of the aristocracy and the “downstairs” help or servants of the household.  It’s about love, hate, loss of life and the birth of new life both literally and figuratively!  While there are no parallels to this story, it’s gritty and tender qualities seem to imbue these characters with the strength they need to shed old destructive patterns of life and explore new choices that could turn either way but are far, far more worthy of the their efforts than they knew in their past banal existences.

While We Were Watching Downton Abbey is a grand, well-paced contemporary read definitely deserving to be on the best seller list!!! Great writing!

Wendy Wax Q&A About Ocean Beach: A Novel

Wendy Wax on OCEAN BEACH, South Beach and Miami...

Wendy, welcome.  It’s nice to have you here today to talk about your new book.  My first question is about the setting.  OCEAN BEACH takes us to Miami’s South Beach. How did you choose South Beach?
There are so many reasons—and I know I’ve already forgotten some of them.  I started out compiling a list of places known for their historic architecture and that have a history of valuing and rescuing buildings and homes. Then I began focusing on those that I’d been to at least once. When I started reminiscing about Miami a light bulb went off.  It seemed perfect for Ocean Beach in so many ways, not just physically—South Beach is famed for its Art Deco heritage—but because it was a natural when it came to so many of the plot points I had in mind. (Not to mention that Avery, who I wanted to head up this renovation, has been in love with all things Art Deco since childhood.) I headed south and fell for both Miami and a house in South Beach that is a wonderful example of the Art Deco Streamline Moderne style. I knew the minute I saw it that Maddie, Avery and Nicole were going to love it, too.

Did you model the house in the book after the one you saw?  Why is it called The Millicent?
I was definitely inspired by the house I saw, which, coincidentally, was just about to be renovated. But there are so many terrific examples of Art Deco and the later Streamline style, and enough buildings and homes designed by architect Henry Hohauser, whose work I especially admire, that The Millicent ended up being an aggregate of many design details that appealed to me.  The Ocean Beach Photo Album I’ve posted on Facebook shares some of those—a “porthole” mirror, a fireplace, some of the damage. Oh, and I’ve credited my fictional house to Henry Hohauser, who remains my current architect crush.
The Millicent is owned by Max Golden.  He and his late wife Millie (Millicent) are based upon the many famed comedy teams whose careers spanned Vaudeville, radio, nightclubs, television and film.  They’re a bit à la Burns and Allen—at least I think of them that way.  When they bought the house in the forties, it was named in honor of the woman Max adored.

You mentioned reminiscing about Miami.  When were you there?
I visited often as a child.  It’s where I swam in a salt water pool for the first time. I remember that once we stayed at the Fontainebleau. I was terribly impressed.  We went to Wolfie’s for breakfast and my dad used to bring bagels home to St. Pete Beach whenever his travels took him through Miami.  My cousins had a well-known restaurant on Collins Avenue, just south of Wolfies.  Later on my brother got married at the Diplomat Country Club in Miami.  And I worked on my first feature film there, Night in Heaven.

Did you take your characters to any of these places?
No, but they did see plenty of South Beach.  Nicole spots megastars Daniel Deranian (father to single parent Kyra’s baby Dustin) and his wife Tonja Kay by the pool at The Delano while meeting the client she hopes will revitalize her high-end matchmaking career. Avery and Chase escape to The Clevelander Hotel. Nicole and Maddie breakfast at Big Pink. Maddie, Nicole and Avery crash Daniel Deranian’s party at The Setai Hotel to “rescue” Kyra, but overdo the champagne instead. Everybody likes Ted’s Hideaway, a small neighborhood bar next door to Big Pink, as well as the view of the jetty and Government Cut from the beach where Nicole, Avery, Maddie, Kyra and Deirdre go to speak frankly, away from the cameras filming their reality show Do Over.  The show is supposed to be focused on the renovation of The Millicent, but last minute instructions from the network has it intruding into every aspect of their somewhat rocky lives.
Now that I think about it, they really get around.

Maddie, Nicole and Avery first met in your novel Ten Beach Road.  Do you need to have read that novel to enjoy Ocean Beach?
I don’t think so.  I worked hard to make sure Ocean Beach shared any of the back story pertinent to Do Over and the women’s friendship and current circumstances, and I tried to do it without being intrusive.  I’m looking forward to hearing what others think and, fingers-crossed, I’ve accomplished what I set out to do.  At the same time, I’m really excited about those who have already read Ten Beach Road getting a chance to return to the characters’ lives in Ocean Beach.  So many people got in touch asking for more of Maddie, Nicole and Avery’s story.  So, here it is—and I hope they enjoy reading it as much as I loved writing it.

Where can we find out more about Ocean Beach, Ten Beach Road and what you’re up to?
I’ve posted a lot of information on my web site, including excerpts of both books. My Facebook page has a
second excerpt from Ocean Beach, plus photos showing research, inspiration and a look at Miami’s past.  Both sites list the dates and locations for appearances and signings—and I’m always happy to meet readers and talk books.

Thanks for joining us, Wendy.
Thanks for having me.  I appreciate the chance to share news and tidbits about Ocean Beach.  I really look
forward to hearing from readers who want to get in touch to share their thoughts and opinions or to simply say hello. Happy summer!

Ocean Beach: A Novel by Wendy Wax

Ocean Beach: A Novel. Wendy Wax. Berkley Trade Paperback. June 26, 2012. 448 pages. ISBN #: 9780425245415.

Madeline, Avery, Nicole, Deirdre, and Chase are back from their stint in the novel, Ten Beach Road, with some kinks solved and some still lurking as they embark on another "Do-Over" of a dilapidated home that is an architectural treasure!  But you wouldn't know it to read the descriptions of what these fearful but also feisty characters see, hear, smell, and touch on their first exploration of their latest project in South Miami, Florida.  Here's the difference - they are now part of a TV program in which their redo job is to be followed like a reality show.  But don't realize that all of their lives are to be included this "reality" show.  That's their first major shock!

This is the home of Max, a former comedian, who has recently lost Millie, the love of his life.  He's still got plenty of pizazz but it's laced with lack of energy and admission of total lack of skills to keep this gorgeous "nautical" home in the prime condition it deserves.  Now a bit of zest comes back into his life as he enjoys the presence of these diverse ladies and of course Baby Dustin.

All is not bliss.  There's a serious lack of money for this project that not even the TV pay can help.  Then there are the personal problems plaguing their daily progress.  Maddie's husband wants her to stay home and be the homemaker while he "earns the bread;" Avery and Deirdre are still on rocky road territory with the latter wanting to make up for years of no mothering and the former not buying the efforts one bit.  Nicole wants to resurrect her matchmaking business, ruined by her reputation as the wife of a Ponzi-scheming criminal.  Avery and Chase are a hot number now but there are some issues there as well.  At first one might think this is just a rehash of the last novel, but it's NOT so!  For there are secrets lurking that turn this summer (all-year round really) read into a romantic mystery that's even more thrilling than the last novel.

Max and Millie lived with a heart-breaking secret that just might fit into the "do-over" plans with some help from other new characters in this terrific story.  The cameramen learn to be a bit wiser about what they film and don't film after some nasty and also funny scenes. To tell more would be a spoiler that would deprive you of hours of pleasure!

Ocean Beach: A Novel is plainly and imply a great and must read!!!  Wendy Wax is one very talented writer who knows how to craft a great story with complex characters, a great plot, and plug in just enough steamy romance to satisfy everyone.  Finely done!!!

Ten Beach Road by Wendy Wax

Ten Beach Road. Wendy Wax. Berkley Books/Trade Paperback. May 2011. ISNB #: 9780425240861. Includes Reader's Guide.

Three families' lives are shattered upon discovering that the money they thought was wisely invested is gone via Matthew Dyer's Ponzi scam. Maddie Singer's husband, Steve, loses his job because he has invested his client's money in Dyer's scam, and Steve simply quits mentally and spends his days wielding the remote control on the living room couch. Maggie is determined to find out if the mysterious "mansion" in Florida on the Gulf side has any potential as their last hope for financial survival.

Avery Lawford is a co-host on the popular TV home and garden show, "Hammer and Nails." Little by little, her role in that show is reduced to smiling and looking pretty, until the day comes when she is sacked and without any help from her ex-husband host, Trent. She also is absolutely stunned on realizing that what she thought was her nestegg is gone into Matthew Dyer's illegal financial dealings. All she has left, as well, is a share of ownership in this Florida "mansion."

Nikki Grant, a professional matchmaker, discovers that the brother she herself raised has turned out to be the man who has duped not only individuals but also charities and other needy institutions out of their principal funds as well as interest. In fact, he has even left his own sister nothing to grasp for living on a day to day basis except for a third of a share this unknown Florida residence, Bella Flora.

These three woman, plus Avery's mother and Maddie's daughter, slowly arrive to discover their seaside Florida home is nowhere near sellable status. The story begins as they begin the grind of restoring this architectural masterpiece, disguised as a broken-down shack, with the hopes of thus recouping at least a small portion for their financial survival.

The story evolves with wonderful descriptions of restoring and decorating this beautiful home, with the assistance of many unexpected sources and experts. We share the strengths and weaknesses of these women, who carry unique stories of betrayals and secrets but manage to transcend them to complete the task at hand and forge friendships that are both priceless and eternal.

The Chinese call every challenge an opportunity, refusing to be daunted by the ferocity or formidable quality of any problem. That attitude becomes the lodestone guiding these women, as well as a sense of thankfulness. When the task is finally very near total completion, more dark revelations and storms threaten it all. That is when we see and come to love the feisty, caring characters of these women forging new lives and refusing to surrender to anything or anyone.

Funny, heart-breaking, romantic, and so much more, Ten Beach Road is a superb read that depicts all facets of women in distress and woman who exponentially grow as they learn to trust one another and reinvent the rest of their lives. This story about recovery and restoration on so many levels is just delightful!

Magnolia Wednesdays by Wendy Wax

Magnolia Wednesdays by Wendy Wax. Berkeley Books - The Penguin Group (USA), Inc. March 2010. ISBN #: 9780425232354

Are you fantasizing that you're on the hit show, "Dancing With The Stars?" What is it about dancing that is so very, very satisfying that it seems like one's soul is flying free, with all the cares and concerns of the world gone for a brief, luscious time? What's it like when one gets to know real people in a real dance studio? What's happening in between the glamorous, exciting, vibrant moments? How can dance transform one's life?

Shot twice - once literally in the butt and then again figuratively by her boss, Vivien Gray is unemployed, with a bruised rear end and a very bruised ego! Unable to obtain another journalistic job as an investigative reporter and finding herself in another precarious state in her lower end of middle age state, Vivien comes up with a unique idea and travels to her sister, Melanie's home in Georgia to find out what the scoop really is about suburban lives. The discoveries and surprises are stereotypical and yet Wendy Wax has a delightful manner of presenting them so that it seems like one is reading about these facts and interpretations for the first time, with quite a bit of humor and playfulness added. How, for example can you tell the status of someone driving an SUV of a certain make and year, after considering all of the stickers all over the bumpers and windows?

The essence of this very readable story, though, is about people changing and evolving, growing apart and then growing closer, speaking one's mind honestly and dealing with the consequences, all in all making pivotal choices and running with the results. So Vivien has to deal with the sense of estrangement she senses in her niece and nephew, as well as the unacknowledged feelings her own sister is harboring against Vivien. Then there's Mom who's never quite satisfied with anything said, done and probably even thought by her daughters or a boyfriend who's never stuck around long enough to establish some depth in a relationship. There's Melanie's friend Ruth whose confidence grows enough to make an incredible challenge to her spouse of many years. On and on we read, moving deeper into the personalities, the talents and quirks of these very human people who are forced to struggle through their crises or forever be stymied by them.

Wendy Wax knows how to spin a credible, humorous, poignant and provocative story with some incredible issues behind it - all in a style that is surprising, credible and in a very real sense, life-changing.

Superbly written, Wendy Wax!!! More please!!!
